Youth action sports can be fun but very challenging to capture good candid photos. It all depends on what you are attempting to capture. Is it a specific player you are focused on? Is it multiple players? Game action?
What I have learned and still need to do a better job of is to concentrate on the purpose of what you plan to capture. Should I start looking for the artistic images or do I find the perfect angle to get the top action moment? I tend to fall into waiting for the action and miss the small moments between plays that tell the story of the emotion.
As I continue to evolve with my photography, I am trying to find those other moments that most do not see. The biggest hurdle for that is to know the locations that will allow those images to present themselves. Being in the right spot at the right time and being ready. Too often, I get lost in watching the action (without my finger on the shutter). It is something that I will need to continue to improve on as I get more into this.
My goal as summer is starting to wind down and fall sports are about to begin...shoot more! Find more games to get better at my craft. I have done a lot of work with the Bondurant-Farrar High School athletic teams over the last 3-4 years. Now, I want to expand my horizons and get into more youth sports and getting action photos for parents/athletes to enjoy. If you are interested in allowing me to take pictures of your young athlete's games, contact me.
